RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says Iran and six world powers have agreed to meet in Istanbul on April 13 for the latest round of talks about Iran's nuclear program.

Clinton made the announcement at a news conference Saturday following a security conference in Saudi Arabia. That conference focused on the nuclear program, which the U.S. and other believe is intended to develop nuclear weapons, and on military threats from Iran in the Persian Gulf region.

Iran and the six nations ? the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China ? met in Istanbul 14 months ago. But the talks ended after two days with the sides unable to agree on what to talk about.

Iran contends the program is solely for peaceful energy and research purposes.

Army Reviews Controversial Drug After Afghan Massacre

Caspian Sea oil and gas [wikipedia.org] unrecovered reserves are enormous, valued at over $10 trillion. Iran is currently a transit country for this, but the aim is to use Afghanistan instead. The Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline [wikipedia.org] is a big part of this. Plans for an Afghan pipeline have been in the making for a long time, U.S. Congress testimony in 1998: [house.gov]

Mr. MARESCA. It's not going to be built until there is a single Afghan Government. That's the simple answer. We would not want to be in the situation where we became the target of the other faction. In any case, because of the financing situation, credits are not going to be available until there is a recognized government of Afghanistan.
Mr. BEREUTER. So you are not making any suggestions about the prospects of that or timing of that. It's just you are not going to move or it's not going to be moved from another source until that happens. That would be your judgment?
Mr. MARESCA. That's my judgment. We do of course follow very closely the negotiations which have been going on. We are hopeful that they will lead somewhere. All wars end. I think that's a universal rule. So one of these days this war too will end. Then I believe the pipeline will be secure.

That war (officially) ended thanks to the U.S. military, Afghanistan was (officially) unified under the Karzai government, and in 2002 Karzai signed the TAPI pipeline deal. Very fast given the complexity of such a deal. The U.S. has invested $0.5 trillion in the Afghan War so far, that's quite a lot just to bring bin Laden to justice. That $0.5 trillion didn't magically disappear - it was given to corporations which have profited handsomely from this war. Some stand to profit even more in the future from the ability to export Caspian Sea oil and gas through Afghanistan. And it also isolates Iran further.

Is it all a coincidence? It does seem awfully convenient...

More Peeks Inside Justin Bieber's Would-Be Dream Home ...

Friday, March 30, 2012, by Rob Bear

The pop star Justin Bieber, for all his obvious fortune, has not had the best luck in the real estate market of late. First, the glassy modern Hollywood Hills home he first so desired was apparently bought out from under him by a fellow celebrity, and the guy renting that house at the time, Ashton Kutcher. Now, the teen idol has some more prosaic real estate problems. The Calabasas, Calif. house he settled on has apparently run into trouble with the lender's appraiser. The Spanish-style home, most recently listed for $6M, has just been appraised for much, much less, meaning the deal might not go through. Bieber will have to front more cash or walk away thanks to a regulation passed in the wake of the mortgage crisis that requires lenders to loan based on the appraised value. Then again, this kid is, according to Forbes, worth more than $53M and continues to rake it in. In short, if he wants this place, he'll get it. In the meantime, take a look at some more photos from the kid's could-be hacienda.

(AP) ? For years, kopek-pinching Soviets sat down in a cheap restaurant in a former mansion of the nobility for plain meals, unaware of the treasure secreted nearby.

Workers restoring the building this week finally found it, unexpectedly, in a storage space hidden between two floors ? more than 1,000 pieces of jewelry, silver service sets stamped with the name of one of Russia's most prominent noble families, mirrors and brushes in silver frames. Many of them were wrapped in newspapers dated from the early months of 1917, as Russia careened toward the Bolshevik Revolution that ended life as the nobles had known it.

Friday's announcement of the find by the Intarsia company, which is performing the restoration work, excited the news media and sparked arguments over who can claim the valuables. The find is so new that experts haven't had time to inspect the goods and estimate their value.

The treasure tale touches on two of Russia's most renowned and romantic figures: Peter the Great and Alexander Pushkin.

The mansion was purchased in 1875 by Duke Vasily Naryshkin, whose family included Nataliya Naryshkina, the second wife of Czar Alexis and the mother of Peter the Great. The mansion had been put together by connecting two 18-century houses, one of which belonged to Pushkin's African grandfather Abram Gannibal.

After the Bolsheviks nationalized private property, part of the mansion was turned into a stolovaya, a canteen-like restaurant serving utilitarian meals, according to Russian news reports. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the building housed apartment, became private apartments, then was purchased by Intarsia to be turned into a conference and cultural center.

Intarsia said it would like to display the treasures for public view in the cultural center once it's completed; for now, they're in custody of the city's committee for historical preservation.

But who has the final claim to them hasn't been resolved.

Sergei Malinkovich, head of a regional Communist organization, told the Rosbalt news agency that his group will apply for ownership of the items on the grounds that the group is the successor to the Communists who nationalized state property.

"The essential thing here is that at the moment of the creation of the hiding-place, the treasure was no longer property of the Naryshkins," he said.

The state news agency, meanwhile, cited Ivan Artsishevsky, chairman of the House of Romanov in Russia, as saying it appears the closest relative to the Naryshkins who occupied the house lives in France, but that it was unclear if this person would seek the valuables.

Google Maps for Android gets bumped to 6.5, new navigation view and higher resolution map tiles in tow

Google's has never been shy at continually iterating on its wares, and today it's Maps on Android's turn. Headlining the 6.5 release is the above ICS-only revamp of the Navigation home screen, which we're told makes selecting previous and recent destinations a cinch. Additionally, there's also support for crisper map tiles (if your device is rocking a higher resolution screen) in addition to new options for mass transit directions which can prioritize routes with fewer transfers or less walking. See it in action in the feel-good promotional video after the break, or get the full skinny at the source link below.

Real estate listings declining : Pinellas County - Tampa Bay ...

The Pinellas County Realtor Organization recently released its monthly report, detailing real estate statistics for February 2012.

According to the organization, the decrease in listings continued in February and is starting to get to concerning levels.

Active inventory shrunk and nondistressed properties continue to increase their lead. Just over 21 percent of available homes are short sales and foreclosures, a full 6 percent decrease over last February. According to Leon Sarkisian, 2012 PRO chairman of the board, and Realtor with Prudential Tropical Realty, properties that have been on the market for an extended period of time are starting to get interest from buyers. Sarkisian went on to say that many homeowners are too nervous to sell their existing homes for fear of not being able to get financing on a new home.

In the overall residential market, sales were up about 2 percent from February 2011 to February 2012.

However, for the same time period the median sales price was up almost 18 percent. This may indicate the low inventory is starting to drive prices higher, as pending sales are up 10 percent and listings are down 34 percent according to the report.

Single-family sales are up only about 1.5 percent from February 2011 to February 2012. The median sales price for the single-family market is up almost 20 percent. Pending sales are up 8 percent while the month?s supply of inventory is down almost 40 percent from February 2011 to February 2012.

The condo market had an almost 3 percent increase in sales over the last year but only 8 percent increase in the median sales price. Active condo listings are down almost 27 percent for the same time period.

What It Means To 'be Happy' | Self Improvement Blogs from ...

Everybody wants to be joyful, but what does happiness really mean? How do we all know if we?re joyful? Can anyone be happy the entire time? How do we find happiness? Once we speak about life happiness, these are the questions that we ask.
Our perception of life happiness is as individual as the way in which we perceive scorching or cold. For all of us, it?s type of the same, but it?s also different. Every particular person individual is different, and subsequently every persons description of what makes a life happy can even be different.

Dictionary.com says happiness is:
1. Characterized by good luck; fortunate
2. Enjoying, showing, or marked by pleasure, satisfaction, or joy

Webster?s Dictionary says happiness is: A state of well-being and contentment

So, if we use these definitions, to ensure that us to say we are pleased we would be lucky, displaying pleasure and feeling content. That makes sense. Most people that we expect are happy usually show these characteristics, so lets use this definition and go from there.

Can I?ve life happiness if I don?t think I am fortunate? Hmmm, that?s an interesting query isn?t it? Most individuals are glad once they feel fortunate or blessed by good luck, and most people who really feel unfortunate or feel like they have lots of dangerous luck are unhappy. BUT, perception is everything. An individual can break their leg in a skiing accident (bad luck) and still be completely happy and smiling as a result of they really feel blessed and lucky (in all probability as a result of they did not break each legs!). They could be completely happy as a result of they know that their leg will heal, and because they were having such fun snowboarding (up until they bumped into the tree at one hundred miles/hour!!)! Get the picture?

Or an individual may have what most of us would name good fortune and still appear not to have life happiness. There may be an artwork to happiness, and some of us comprehend it and some of us do not, however all of us can learn.

Is life happiness the identical for everyone? In all probability not, even though the conventional signs of happiness listed above in the dictionary definitions probably present up in every one that is happy. Different things make completely different people glad, so happiness and the pursuit of happiness cannot be the same. For example: I am a Logo promotional prodctus type of one that loves to work at home and socializes only once or twice a week. You may be a really gregarious one who works in an workplace full of people and lunches with a special individual each day and goes to a celebration each Saturday evening. We?re each blissful, however our existence are very different. Moreover that, what you view as one thing that might produce happiness will not be a precedence for me. Possibly it makes you content to go on fantastic ski holidays twice a year. It?d make me happy to go on fantastic vacations in my again yard and to squirrel my cash away. Both situations are proper, and we are both happy.

How do you know in the event you?re joyful? The easiest way to inform in case you are comfortable is to ask yourself how you?re feeling. Actually feeling. Do you are feeling comfy, relaxed and OK with how things are going on a reasonably consistent basis? You then?re most likely happy. Really feel your body. Is your physique relaxed, does it feel calm? You are probably happy. Remember, happiness doesn?t come from wherever however inside. If you?re in tune with what?s right for you, you?ll be happy. In case you are attempting to stay another person?s definition of genuine happiness, you in all probability won?t be.

Can anyone have authentic happiness all the time? Sure! Well, OK, if a terrible tragedy strikes, you in all probability will not be completely happy at that time. However, you can work by means of the tragedy and the accompanying feelings figuring out that life happiness can and will return once you?ve taken time to correctly enable healing. Otherwise, yes. You might be pleased all the time. Perhaps not jumping up and down and laughing joyful every second, but peaceful content completely happy, certainly, and that?s equally valuable. Life?s small irritants come and go each day. We?ve got a choice whether we greet them with a peaceful smile or with an offended frown. Either is fine, however the calm smile will enable you to navigate life in a more completely satisfied state of being, and enable you find happiness on a consistent basis. Keep in mind, the art of happiness has rather a lot to do with perception.

Current research on happiness exhibits what many of us have long suspected. Happiness, and the pursuit of happiness has more to do with an individual?s notion and what?s going on inside that particular person, than cash, fame, or power. Though these issues could carry a sense that?s like happiness, it?s connected to these things. Real happiness is much more attached to how a person perceives life. Fortunately, if you?re the kind of person who has a ?glass half empty? outlook on life, you can study to have a ?glass half full? perspective which will acquire you happiness.

President Obama: On all these issues, but particularly missile defense, this, this can be solved but it?s important for him to give me space.

President Medvedev: Yeah, I understand. I understand your message about space. Space for you?

President Obama: This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.

President Medvedev: I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.

Of course, nobody should be surprised by this: This is just reality. But normally politicians aren't heard spelling out reality so clearly.

Angry Birds Space

Pigs ? in ? SPAAAAAAACE! Rovio's omnipresent Angry Birds franchise blasts off to new heights with Angry Birds Space, which brings the barreling birds and sinister pigs into a new universe with totally different physics than the previous Angry Birds lineup.

Space is the fourth Angry Birds title (after the original game, Seasons and Rio) and like the original and Rio, it's designed so you can start without ever having played Angry Birds before. (Seasons is considerably more difficult.) The plot, as usual, is simple and silly: alien pigs in Robotech suits have come through a wormhole to steal the birds' eggs, and the birds must blast off through the wormhole to rescue them.

The eggs are a MacGuffin, as you're blitzing through a (hopefully) endless series of levels to knock down towers full of pigs. The new thrill is in the game's new physics. Your Angry Birds can be drawn towards planets by their gravity fields, or float away in zero-G. Various levels daisy-chain or overlap gravity fields, too, giving the birds swirly, whirly flight paths. A visible trajectory guide helps you work out the geometry.

Beyond the new physics, Angry Birds Space is more time-sensitive than the previous games. As you knock objects off planets, they float around the board, and you can target them with succeeding birds. Timing several birds in a row becomes more critical, more often, than in the other Angry Birds games.

Several familiar birds are here, dressed in sharp new space gear, but some have new powers, and there are new birds, too. The triangular "speedy" bird can now be aimed, changing direction when he speeds up. A square bird turns objects to ice, making them easier for other birds to break through.?The soundtrack is also new, but familiar?the usual carnival tones, and the usual squeaky cheers and sinister grunts.?

Occasional bonus levels offer in-game in-jokes. Landing on a golden egg could unlock a level making a riff on Space Invaders or Mario Brothers, for instance.

The elegance and smooth gameplay that set Angry Birds apart from some of its clones are here in full force. Angry Birds has just the right level of difficulty, and just the right amount of gradation between levels. It's easy enough that you can make progress without being a dedicated gamer, but difficult enough that it'll offer at least a few hours of challenge.

On iOS, you can break through problem levels by deploying the "Mighty Eagle," which blasts everything on the level. You get three Mighty Eagles for proceeding past the first few levels, and then you can buy Mighty Eagle packs in-game for prices starting at 99 cents for 20 eagles.

There aren't many levels, at least yet. The iOS versions have 95, while the standard Android version has only 65. Rovio has been good at providing free new levels in updates for its other games, though.

iPad, iPhone and Android Apps: Differences
I tested Angry Birds Space on a new Apple iPad ($499-829, 4.5 stars) to run the iPad and iPhone versions, an HTC Sensation 4G ($199, 4 stars) Android phone and an Asus eee Pad Transformer Prime Android tablet ($499, 4 stars.) The iPhone app costs 99 cents, the Retina-ready "HD" iPad app costs $2.99, and the Android app has free ad-supported and 99-cent, no-ad versions. All the versions are around 20MB in size. The game ran very smoothly on all the devices, and the new iPad's Retina graphics were visibly smoother and more beautiful than the same game played on an iPad 2.

While Google's Play store shows a special Android tablet version for $2.99, Google Play said it was not compatible with my Asus Transformer Prime. But the generic, free version played just fine on the Transformer Prime, and I appreciated the extra real estate when aiming my birds. Some of the graphic assets can look pretty tiny on phones.

The iPhone and iPad versions of Angry Birds Space have a few advantages over the Android version. Most notably, both have an entire additional set of 30 levels called "Danger Zone" which you can only get on Android if you have a Samsung phone. That means most Android users will have 65 levels rather than 95.

The iOS versions let you win achievements and check leaderboards in GameCenter; the Android version has no social component, even though OpenFeint is popular on Android. And the Android app doesn't appear to have a Mighty Eagle option.

Rovio does need to add some more levels and bring the Android version up to feature parity with iOS. But that aside, Rovio has another win here for casual mobile gamers, earning Angry Birds Space our Editors' Choice award. On Android, as a free game, this is a no-brainer to download. Casual gamers on iOS should spring for the game, too.

Factbox: U.S. healthcare by numbers

(Reuters) - Healthcare, the subject of U.S. Supreme Court arguments from Monday to Wednesday, has been at the heart of a fervent political debate in the United States since long before President Barack Obama's overhaul became law two years ago.

Quite aside from the legal arguments are hot-button issues, ranging from the quality of healthcare to the availability of insurance.

The Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development ranked the health standards of its 34 members in a report last November, "Health at a Glance 2011 - OECD Indicators." Some categories were rankings among a smaller set of countries.

The United States was ranked as follows:

First in Spending - Annual healthcare spending totals $2.6 trillion, equal to 17.9 percent of U.S. annual gross domestic product, or $8,402 for every man, woman and child.

First in Good Health Self-Assessments - 90 percent of U.S. adults aged 15 and older describe themselves as being in good health versus an OECD average of 69.1 percent.

First in Obesity - More than one-third of American adults are obese, up from 15 percent in 1980.

Second in Prevalence of Diabetes - 10.3 percent of the U.S. population suffers from diabetes, surpassed only by Mexico's 10.8 percent. The OECD average is 6.5 percent.

Third out of nine in Waiting Time for Specialists - Out of nine countries from Europe, North America and the Antipodes, the United States has the third-shortest waiting time for specialist appointments at an average of 20 weeks; Germany and Switzerland had shorter waiting periods.

Fourth in Preventing Death from Stroke - The United States ranks behind Israel, Switzerland and France with 32 stroke-related deaths per 100,000 people.

Seventh in Cancer Incidence - Cancer afflicts more than 300 people per 100,000 in the United States, compared with an OECD average of 261.

Ninth in Preventing Death from Cancer - At 185 deaths per 100,000, the United States is behind Australia but well above an OECD average of 208.

10th in Number of Practicing Nurses - 10.8 per 1,000 population versus an OECD average of 8.4 percent.

11th of 11 in Unmet Need for Care Due to Cost - Compared with 10 European countries and Canada, the United States ranks last in its ability to provide affordable care: Thirty-nine percent of people with below-average income and 20 percent of people with above-average income reported forgoing a doctor's visit or prescription because of the cost.

25th in Preventing Death from Heart Disease - At 129 deaths per 100,000 people, the U.S. heart disease mortality rate is worse than those in Canada and Austria and below an OECD average of 117.

27th in Life Expectancy - Americans can expect to live 78.2 years on average, below the OECD average and just behind Slovenia and Chile.

29th in Number of Practicing Doctors - The United States has 2.4 practicing doctors per 1,000 population, placing it below an OECD average of 3.1 and behind Canada and Slovenia.

29th in Doctor Consultations - At 3.9 doctor visits per capita, the United States leads only Ireland, Mexico, Sweden and Chile versus an OECD average 6.5 percent.

30th in Hospital Beds - 3.1 per 1,000 population, behind Portugal, Britain and Spain.

30th in Medical Graduates - 6.5 per 100,000 population, ahead of only France, Japan and Israel. The OECD average is 9.9 percent.

31st in Health Coverage - An estimated 81 percent of Americans are covered by private or government health insurance, placing the country fourth from last behind the Slovak Republic; 25 OECD countries cover 99 percent or more of their citizens.

31st in Infant Mortality - 6.5 babies die per thousand live births in the United States, placing the country behind the Slovak Republic and below an OECD average performance of 4.4.

31st in Preventing Premature Death - The number of years lost in the United States to premature death is surpassed only by Hungary, Mexico and Russia. The main causes for males and females are accidents, violence, cancer and circulatory disease.

'Losing Control' In The Movies

Copyright ? 2012 National Public Radio?. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

IRA FLATOW, HOST:

You're listening to SCIENCE FRIDAY. I'm Ira Flatow. Can a science experiment find you the right mate? A new romantic comedy film opens in New York today. It's called "Losing Control." And the main character is a scientist, Samantha, played by Miranda Kent. She is working on her Ph.D. at Harvard, and she's also trying out sort of her love life at the same time. But unlike the stereotypical scientists we see in movies or on TV, Samantha isn't - she's not one of these super nerds with the dorky glasses, the frizzy hair.

She's a regular person, maybe a tiny bit quirky, but who isn't, right? So how did that happen? Is Hollywood finally getting the message that scientists can be smart and sexy, or maybe it takes a scientist to make a movie that doesn't rely on stereotypes. Joining me now to talk more about the film "Losing Control" is Valerie Weiss. She wrote, directed and produced the film. And she's - and we have a clip of it that we're going to listen to right now.

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "LOSING CONTROL")

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: (as character) You are going to break your neck.

TRUE BELLA PINCI: (as Little Samantha) No, I'm not. The centrifugal force keeps us from falling off.

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: (as character) Sam.

PINCI: (as Little Samantha) My mom doesn't understand science, or she'd know that the equilibrium force of us holding onto each other balances the outward force that makes us feel like we're falling off. Wheeee.

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: (as character) I'm having a heart attack.

PINCI: (as Little Samantha) Don't worry. It's science. It always works.

MIRANDA KENT: (as Samantha) Well, at least, it used to.

FLATOW: That was a great segue from the kids to the rotating little - what was that?

VALERIE WEISS: Sort of centrifuge...

FLATOW: Centrifuge.

WEISS: ...a roundabout centrifuge.

FLATOW: Round - that was - tell us about the plot of the movie.

WEISS: Well, really, I just wanted to make a movie about a centrifuge because I've never seen a centrifuge in a movie before.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

WEISS: So, as you said, it's a quirky romantic comedy about a female scientist who wants proof that her boyfriend is the one.

FLATOW: Yeah. So she does a science experiment with her boyfriend.

WEISS: Exactly. She spends so much time in the lab doing experiments that it just seems second nature to answer her life questions that way as well.

FLATOW: And this is a movie that stars a female scientist in the main role. She's working at a Ph.D. in Harvard. You have a Ph.D. from Harvard. A little bit of a coincidence?

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

WEISS: Well, they say right, you know, and after six years getting a Ph.D., I know it really well.

FLATOW: But you were not a - you never became a scientist, did you?

WEISS: Well, I mean, it depends what you mean. I've been doing science since I was 14, working in labs. And, you know, I did a whole Ph.D. in X-ray crystallography. So I definitely, you know, consider myself a scientist. But I didn't work at it after my Ph.D.

FLATOW: Right.

WEISS: I made my first movie while I was writing my Ph.D. And two weeks after we wrapped, I defended my thesis and never did another experiment again.

FLATOW: What was the tug to the theatre side?

WEISS: You know, I think I'm attracted to both fields because I love to know why things are the way they are. And, you know, relationships or a theatre gets at, you know, relationships and personalities and, you know, social aspects of our lives. And then, you know, I discovered science in 10th grade because I had a great biology teacher, Mr. Charambura, and...

FLATOW: There's always somebody, isn't there? That gets you...

WEISS: You know, science teachers are so important. Someone has to really, like, introduce you to it because it's not necessarily immediately accessible in our culture and - except for shows like yours. And, you know, then I realized that's another way to ask why, and I could get down to the molecular level of why things are the way they are. So that's really the tug for both fields.

FLATOW: 1-800-989-8255 is our number. We're talking with Valerie Weiss, writer, director and producer of "Losing Control." That opens in New York today. A little nervous?

WEISS: Sure. And we've been in festivals for a year. We've screened in 30 film festivals, and we screened for the National Academy of Sciences. So I know audiences love it. So that's - that takes some of the nerves away but...

FLATOW: Did you get support from the science community on this?

WEISS: We got amazing support. A company called VWR - that scientists will know because they furnish everything in your lab - and Eppendorf and Corning and a whole list of other companies were amazing. They filled our - we had a lab from Zencore in Los Angeles that let us shoot for free.

FLATOW: In their lab?

WEISS: In their lab.

FLATOW: Because it looks like a real lab.

WEISS: Thank you. It's so important to me to have authenticity in this movie. And they gave us an empty lab because, of course, they didn't want us messing with experiments. And it was great, except we had to fill it on no budget. So these companies donated equipment to us for free. It was amazing.

FLATOW: How did you decide on the character, the lead character, the scientist - what she would - her character be, not the nerdy kind of science person you might see on the "Big Bang Theory," right?

WEISS: Yeah. Well, you know, like I said, authenticity was so important, and I was lucky enough to have access to this world because it was my life...

FLATOW: Right.

WEISS: ...for six years. And, you know, I just based her on myself and my friends, and she, you know, my class was actually 50 percent women. And the women weren't like the stereotypes you see in movies. They were real and vulnerable and had boyfriends and lovers. And, you know, I just wanted people to get to see that. And so really I just, you know, based it on my own experiences.

FLATOW: And did you - the plot, was that based on your own experience?

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

WEISS: It's definitely exaggerated. My favorite filmmaker is Pedro Almodovar in a movie called "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown," was a huge inspiration for me. And I love that sort of zany, absurdist comedy, so you know, things are embellished, but there's a kernel of truth to everything, and the science is 100 percent accurate in the movie.

FLATOW: 1-800-989-8255 is our number if you'd like to talk about the movie "Losing Control" with Valerie Weiss. You say the science is 100 percent accurate.

WEISS: Yeah. There's one scene maybe we fudged a little. But towards the end...

FLATOW: Yeah? I bet you I know what that is.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

WEISS: Don't give it away. Don't give it away. Yeah. Well, I'm not...

FLATOW: 'Cause I thought...

WEISS: ...I'm not a physicist. I'm a biophysicist.

FLATOW: I thought, this can't happen.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

WEISS: Maybe in an alternate universe...

FLATOW: I won't give it away, but we all - all of us who've seen the movie say there's a little bit of fudging going on in this spot...

WEISS: Yeah. But it was too good not to put it in. It made me laugh too hard.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

FLATOW: Did you have to teach the actors how to do the pipetting and all that kind of stuff?

WEISS: You know, we did. We spent so much time, 'cause, again, it was so important to me. We had science consultants from UCLA and Xencor. Actually, my actors who play scientists, they came to the lab, they ran a gel, they pipetted. They did everything. They spent a whole day learning. They went to lab meetings. They actually spent probably a week of intensive training, and they were amazing. I think they're really convincing.

FLATOW: How much of the science did you feel you needed to dumb down?

WEISS: No, nothing. I didn't dumb down a thing because I think if you understand science, you can explain it well. And I know Alan Alda is going to talk about that, and I took a workshop with him about communicating science. And I think, you know, it's a matter of A) finding what's personal about it, B) understanding yourself, and C) connecting with your audience. So the only thing we did was find visual ways to explain the same concept. So you know, the scene where she's at a party and she uses elements on the bar to explain her research with, you know, X and Y chromosomes and, you know, audiences get it. It's so rewarding.

FLATOW: Yeah. Yeah, they want as much science as you can give them.

WEISS: Yeah. Oh, yeah. They're just begging for more.

FLATOW: It was something out of...

WEISS: Not sex, it's science. Give us more science.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

FLATOW: There you have it. That was sort of a scene out of "A Beautiful Mind," like they were in a bar, and they were also in another bar.

WEISS: Yeah. Absolutely. It's...

FLATOW: Did you have that in mind at all, the other great scenes in films that were...

WEISS: You know...

FLATOW: ...that you would become part of the lore of...

WEISS: Yeah. You know, I mean, we have some pretty memorable lab scenes we're hoping would go into the great canon of science movies for what we put in there.

FLATOW: All right. Let's take a phone call or two, from Christine in Durham, North Carolina. Hi, Christine.

CHRISTINE: Hi. I'm so disappointed by this movie. I'm a graduate student at Duke, and we've struggled so long to not - I guess the main thing is, is not to sexualize women, especially in science. I mean the documentary "Misrepresentation" just talks about that.

FLATOW: Have you seen - Christine, have you seen...

CHRISTINE: Do we ever hear about a male scientist...

FLATOW: Christine, have you seen the movie? Christine?

CHRISTINE: I haven't. But based on the conversation, I mean, explaining science on a bar - I mean, Ira, you - I enjoy your show, but you got so excited about equating sex and women in science. It's just so disappointing and disgusting. It really is.

FLATOW: Well, OK.

WEISS: Christine, you need to see the movie, because I don't think you'll be disappointed. I think what you'll see is it's the first time a full picture of a real woman is presented, because her brain is absolutely there, and she's an emotional, breathing, real person, and I think you'll actually be very happy when you see it. Check out the trailer at losingcontrolmovie.com. It'll give you a really good taste for it.

CHRISTINE: But you've mentioned sexiness in science four times. Why does that...

WEISS: I also mentioned her research at Harvard, her PhD, the X and Y chromosome. You really should take a look.

CHRISTINE: Yeah, but we all know the history about sexism and women in science. I mean, all of that kind of effort kind of negates what we're trying to achieve.

WEISS: Yeah, I don't think it will. I think you need to take a look, as a good scientist, to do your research before drawing conclusions.

FLATOW: 1-800-989-8255. How many places will this be opening at?

WEISS: We're starting in six cities. We're starting in New York.

FLATOW: If she wants to go see it...

WEISS: Yeah. Well, now we have to go to Durham for sure.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

WEISS: We are starting in New York, then we go to Boston. And actually, this is out of chronological order, but we go to Boston, April 6, at Kendall Square Cinema. We're really excited to - for our hometown screening. And in Los Angeles, we open April 13 at the Laemmle Theater, and we're going to be in Sacramento and Tempe and Tacoma, and that's just the start. All these places are chains. So we're hoping to expand across the country if we have your support and you come out and see the film.

FLATOW: You must have a sequel or another movie...

WEISS: Oh, we have a TV show, actually...

FLATOW: A TV show.

WEISS: ...in the works. Yeah. We think this is a great episodic story where there's a whole other element that's happening in the lab besides her love life. And we're going to sort of make it an Ally McBeal-ish sort of episodic thing.

FLATOW: Interesting. You know, do you ever hear of Leon Lederman? He was a - he's still a physicist. He spent decades going to Hollywood trying to convince Norman Lear and people like that who are very big TV producers to do a TV series based in a laboratory someplace.

WEISS: Somebody told me this story. This was...

FLATOW: Yeah.

WEISS: ...a long time ago, right?

FLATOW: Oh, this is - yeah. Well, I'm old enough to remember 'cause I actually...

WEISS: Who told me this? I think...

FLATOW: I've known Leon forever so...

WEISS: Maybe Joe Palca told - somebody told me the story.

FLATOW: Maybe Joe Palca. Could be.

WEISS: But I think...

FLATOW: And so if you can pull that off, you know ? what the modern version of it, of course, is "CSI."

WEISS: Right.

FLATOW: They got their lab, but they had to disguise it...

WEISS: Right. Well, I think the character-driven element needs to be in there. And, you know, before we made this movie, they said the same thing, like, nobody wants to see scientists and nobody, you know, we have to dumb down the science. And they told me science wasn't visual, which I take huge issue with because it's a very visual movie, ad we found lots of ways to show the science.

FLATOW: Who were the they that told you these things, the producers?

WEISS: You know, just different people.

FLATOW: The industry?

WEISS: Industry a little bit. You know, we met with people who really wanted the movie to be about a scientist who created a potion to find the right man. And, you know, it's like, you know, science is advanced enough. We understand it enough. We can use real science to explore this question. We don't need to make it up.

FLATOW: Well, we wish you good luck and - in your opening. And, you know, we talk a lot about science and theater and film here, and we always hope that they find some legs so everybody can go see them - this gets, you know, wider distribution, so people can call us after they've seen the movie...

WEISS: Great. Thank you.

FLATOW: ...and talk about it...

WEISS: Yes. Let us know after you watch it.

FLATOW: Good luck to you, Valerie Weiss. She is losing control here.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

FLATOW: She wrote, directed and produced the film, and it's a good view(ph) . I advise you all to go take a look. Thank you for coming and talking with us today.

WEISS: Thanks for having me. It's a pleasure.

Capitol Confidential ? Cuomo announces small business ...

Gov. Andrew Cuomo will send a team of officials from at least six agencies ? including the departments of State, Labor, Taxation and Finance as well as Empire State Development, State Liquor Authority, and the Workers Compensation Board ? to every region of the state to talk about rules and programs intended to help small businesses.

The program is a subset of the state?s economic development efforts; it?s dubbed NY Open for Business. One of the first sessions will be held in the Capital Region on 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Schenectady County Community College, 78 Washington Avenue in Schenectady.

?This program is all about creating jobs because when small businesses do well, New York does well,? Cuomo said in a statement. ?It so important for us to get out of the office and go into communities to see how we can help anyone who wants to start, grow or improve a business and that?s what this program will do.?

The workshops held in each region will be conducted in conjunction with local chambers of commerce. Representatives from the agencies will provide opportunities for business owners to speak to them after the main presentation and will direct them to state programs and services. The program will begin with workshops in Utica and Schenectady and will continue throughout the spring and summer months.

Many business owners have contacted the state with questions about regulations, licenses and practices. Some of the topics the seminars will cover include: starting a business and adhering to regulatory timelines; how to obtain and file tax forms; first steps for hiring employees; and, how to become certified as an MWBE.

? Assemblymember Felix Ortiz, Chairman of the Puerto Rican and Hispanic Task Force, said, ?Small business growth and development is a critical issue in the Hispanic community in New York State. Many potential business owners are unclear about the rules and regulations that govern how to establish a successful business. With the help of the state, this program will ensure that those businesses start on the right track and succeed.?

Assemblymember Karim Camara, Chairman of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus, said, ?This effort will increase the creation of jobs around the state and will complement the Governor?s strong commitment to helping Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises. Small businesses are the engines of our economy. Supporting these businesses will benefit all New Yorkers.?

Chief Diversity Officer Yrthya Dinzey-Flores said, ?Our local and ethnic chambers of commerce are a tremendous resource for small businesses and they are a key component of the Governor?s efforts to reach a broad array of existing and potential business owners. These organizations bring a wealth of experience and diversity that greatly complements what government can do to support the growth and prosperity of small businesses.?

Deputy Secretary for Civil Rights Alphonso David said, ?The Governor has tasked us with ensuring that we bring essential government services to businesses in the most efficient and impactful way. We are working on all fronts to remove barriers that have hindered small business growth, particularly for minority firms. Consistent with the Governor?s Open for Business campaign, this initiative seeks to make it easier for small businesses to interface with government and obtain the government services that exist for them to succeed. ?

Heather Briccetti, President& CEO of The Business Council of New York State, Inc., said, ?This outreach program focusing on small and immigrant-owned businesses gets essential information directly to those that need it. Both Governor Cuomo and business leaders know that by working together we can foster minority?and women-owned business growth, expand our economy and help New York attract new business and create jobs. We commend the Governor on this initiative and look forward to participating in more public/private partnerships.?

Frank Garcia, Chairman of the New York State Coalition of Hispanic Chambers of Commerce, said, ?By launching this initiative, Governor Cuomo is acknowledging both the importance of small business to the state?s economy as well as the role that local and ethnic chambers of commerce play in the creation and growth of jobs in our state. We are excited to be working with the Governor and his team on this initiative.?

Rita Paniagua, Executive Director of the Spanish Action League in Central NY, said, ?Small businesses are a key component of the upstate economy and this program will inform business owners of the many programs and services the state has to assist them.?

Robin Douglas, President and CEO of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Westchester and Rockland Counties, Inc., said, ?So many of our member businesses need advice and simple answers to questions but do not know where to go. This type of panel discussion can give them the information they need in an easily accessible format in their own region.?

Bonnie Wong, President of Asian Women in Business, said, ?Small business owners work long hours running their shops, restaurants, practices and companies and it can be challenging for them to access information. By bringing these seminars into our neighborhoods, the Governor is demonstrating his commitment to all business owners around the state.?

Alfred Placeres, President of the New York State Federation of Hispanic Chambers of Commerce, said, ?Small business owners often have many questions about issues such as taxes, labor and workers compensation, but have challenges knowing where to turn for help. We are excited that the Governor has created an initiative to provide important information to small business owners. ?

The business outreach initiative will be held in the following regions and on the following dates.

Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm: 5 Reasons Zimmerman's "Stand Your Ground" Defense Won't Work in Trayvon Martin Case

As a former federal prosecutor and a former attorney general, I want to talk about the Trayvon Martin story because it disturbs me as a prosecutor, and it deeply disturbs me as a mother of a teenage son. Let me say a word first as a prosecutor.

You've heard of this story -- Cenk Uyger, Keith Olbermann and others in the news media have covered this -- Trayvon Martin was the 17-year-old Florida high school football player who was shot and killed last month. He was visiting with his father and family friend in a gated community. He was walking back to the home from a convenience store in the rain in the early evening three weeks ago, carrying skittles and a can of iced tea.

Trayvon's killer, George Zimmerman, was the volunteer "watchman" for the gated community. That night, as Zimmerman followed Trayvon, he called 911 because he thought the teenager in the hoodie was suspicious. Zimmerman is 28-years-old, a criminal justice major, who had called the Sanford police department 46 times since he took on the role as guardian for the community.

Zimmerman claims that in shooting Trayvon he acted in self-defense based upon a 2005 law called "Stand Your Ground."

Here's what the law says:

A person who is not engaged in an unlawful activity, and who is attacked in any other place where he or she has a right to be has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.

This law is part of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC)'s cluster of pro-NRA bills that shot through legislatures in the past few years. Florida's law was the first and 17 states now have a version of this law, many with virtually identical language.

The way the bill is written, in order for the defense to work, the prosecutor has to rebut Zimmerman's claim that he acted in self-defense.

Basically, the prosecutor has to prove that it was unreasonable for Zimmerman to believe that Trayvon Martin was about to kill him or greatly injure him.

Officer reports reveal that Zimmerman claimed he was jumped from behind by Trayvon and he acted in self-defense.

Here are the five main pieces of evidence that address the likelihood of that defense:

  1. The call from Zimmerman to law enforcement, and the officers telling Martin not to pursue. Zimmerman whispers what many have described as a racial slur under his breath.
  2. There is a 911 call where you can hear a voice yelling for help and a firearm shot.
  3. Trayvon's father identified his voice on that 911 call on Al Sharpton's Politics Nation program on MSNBC.
  4. The account of the girlfriend, who says Trayvon told her by cellphone that he was being followed.
  5. Trayvon was not armed and weighed between 75-100 pounds less than Zimmerman.

The evidence that we know of -- the public evidence -- establishes that Zimmerman was the pursuer, and not the victim.

So, without having heard directly from Zimmerman himself or knowing any other evidence, it seems to me it is 'probable' that Zimmerman's "Stand Your Ground" defense will not fly. Based just upon what we can see from the public record, Zimmerman should be arrested.

There's something even more troubling about this case to me, as a parent.

I keep looking at the pictures of the baby-faced handsome young man. His voice on that 911 tape crying for help is agonizing for any parent to hear.

I have a wonderful teenage son too. He wears hoodies, carries his cell phone and likes skittles. If this were my son, by god ...

But let's face it, this would not happen to my son. This happened to Trayvon Martin because he's black.

My heart breaks for Trayvon's parents. Imagine it were your son on that 911 tape, begging for someone to help.

Would you be satisfied with George Zimmerman being a free man?

The Sanford police department needs to take action.

And in fact, in the last hour, the Sanford city commission voted 3 to 2 that it had no confidence in Police Chief Bill Lee Jr. They can't fire him, so now Lee needs to take the next step and resign.

If the Sanford police department or the state does not take action, a much larger power -- the U.S. Department of Justice -- hopefully will.

NAACP President Turner Clayton said today that the Department of Justice had already taken a first step, with Eric Holder "summoning" Sanford's mayor and city manager to Washington.

One thing is for sure: this is not the end of this story.
