Apple iPad 3 to include the iPhone 4S SIRI?

Yet another Apple rumor to serve you. This time, it?s all about the iPad 3 and its possible features.

Yes, Apple is expected to release a new tablet next year that might use the ?iPad 3? name. Early reports say it will arrive by second quarter of 2012, similar to previous iPad releases.

According to eWeek, Apple?s iPad 3 could feature the voice assistant SIRI citing reports circulating online. Apparently, the iPhone 4S customers say the new voice command feature is the ?best feature? beating the new dual-core A5 chip and the new 8-megapixel camera, so it looks like Apple can sell more iPads if it will also give the next-gen tablet a sexy voice command treatment.

Apple iPad 3 rumors.

Rumors also add that the next iPad will feature a better LCD screen citing months-old reports posted online like the statement from LG Display CEO who said that the ?Retina? display is coming to the iPad and other non-iPhone smartphones.

The ?revolution? of Android smartphones is ongoing. In fact, the latest phone from Google and Samsung, the Galaxy Nexus, features a 4.65-inch screen with 310 pixels per inch, very close. It is worth noting that the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S feature a 3.5-inch screen with 326 pixels per inch.

One analyst said the iPad 3 might arrive in February, but follow ups from other ?experts? say Apple will still follow the April tradition. Either way, according to new reports, Apple will not release a new tiny tablet to compete against the Amazon Kindle Fire.

Instead, according to these self-proclaimed Apple experts, Apple will release a new iPad next year, and the company will drop the prices of the iPad 2 variants. The possibility of the 8GB iPad is also high, says others.

Washington Church of Christ holds toy giveaway

12/21/2011?3:35 AM

More than 1,000 donated toys went to local families in need during Washington Church of Christ's second annual toy giveaway Saturday.

"It's just a way that we can reach out to the community and help some people with Christmas so their family can have a good holiday season," said minister David Deagel.

Church member Christopher Flickinger, who helped organize the event at the church's 700 Allison Ave. location, said the congregation expected to touch the lives of about 500 families through the program, ensuring more smiles from area children on Christmas morning.

He said within the first hour, most of the toy rooms had already been picked over, a big leap from the 250 toys given out last year.

Rate This Story:
1 the lowest - 5 the highest

Current rating: "We've had exponential growth both in terms of toy inventory and community support, so this is something that we'll keep doing for years and years to come," he said.

All of the toys were donated by the congregation, of which about 75 members volunteered to greet those in attendance, hand out treats and take on the massive task of wrapping the stacks of gifts.

"We are a family ... we get together for all different functions, and we bring folks in because we just love what we do," said church secretary Patti Piatt. "It is awesome to be a part of somebody's life for just a moment."

In addition to the helping hands of church members, about 50 local businesses sponsored the giveaway, donating food, drinks and other items, which made for a rather impressive breakfast spread.

Looking beyond the presents and sweets, Flickinger explained the toy giveaway does more than just fill space under the tree.

"It puts a nice lasting impression on their heart and if they can come back and grow closer to God, so be it," he said.

Your Business' Social Media Reflection

Social Media Reflection

Social networking began as a confusing mess for many growing companies. Since then, teams of web developers, internet service providers and engineers have simplified the experience through web apps, smart phone applications and user-friendly APIs.

Now the process of marketing your business through social media is easier than ever. This ease of use, however, has turned out to be a double-edged sword. With many one-touch solutions for creating social networking profiles, the web has become cluttered with a mess of business-related social media accounts blasting massive volumes of sporadic marketing messages.

This is a serious problem for any company with long-term social media marketing ambitions. Recent studies done by the Altimeter Group showed that companies with more than 1000 employees averaged over 39 Twitter accounts, 31 blogs and nearly 30 Facebook accounts or pages. What this equates to is patchy distribution of content and inconsistency in the image of a brand, resulting in mixed feelings from a business?s customers.

Consolidate Social Media Efforts

It is a common misconception that a company?s organizational architecture should be reflected in their social media campaign. That is, every department and every product will get its own Twitter and/or Facebook page, etc.

The sad realization is that a business?s web presence becomes separated into several, hard-to-follow, fragmented online communities. If your social media strategy is flooded with unnecessary accounts, you may eventually lose your captive audience. It is important to remember that nobody can manage several dozen pages simultaneously without exhausting unnecessary amounts of effort. As a result, many pages will become dormant, customer engagement will tank, and your online marketing strategy will suffer as a result. From a very practical viewpoint, some internet service providers may not be able support massive amounts of digital content.

Instead, your company?s online marketing campaign should implement a strict social media policy, one that outlines exactly what warrants the creation of a new social media page. You should also consider the amount and types of resources required to operate and maintain each social media account. If you?re able to minimize your social media strategy in terms of shear account volume, the costs of managing these accounts will go down, and your efforts will be more effective in the long-run.

Linking and Liking

Every social media campaign needs to identify a clear link and interaction structure. Effective link structure lets you clearly establish and assign significance of each individual social media account.

It?s important to do this as quickly and as efficiently as possible. This lets you map out a plan to gauge how you can best serve each micro-community associated with each social media account.

This also opens the door to assigning value to content as it relates to other pages. As you set this plan in motion, you can then re-purpose content across your multiple social media pages (text, video, infographics and tweets). As the social web becomes more cluttered with useless content, the practice of implementing good link structure technique will be social media?s saving grace.

Plan Before You Post

Finally, after consolidating all necessary social media accounts and putting a solid structure into place for linking and liking, it?s time to plan content. Many companies believe that just like in advertising, sheer volume equals success. The problem with publishing lots of content constantly, is that at some point, audiences will get sick of you.

Carefully planning content publishing initiatives is the best way to keep from burning out an audience and maintaining appeal. Many companies setup an editorial calendar, not unlike what magazines, newspapers and trade publications use. Simple, scheduled, and consistent messages will always reflect a business better than sheer volume. How does your social media campaign reflect your business?

Europeans lukewarm on Nokia Windows phone: survey (Reuters)

HELSINKI (Reuters) ? European consumers show little interest in Nokia's first smartphone using Microsoft's Windows Phone software, a survey by Exane BNP Paribas showed on Friday.

"With only 2.2 percent of surveyed buyers firmly intending to purchase the Lumia, Nokia's first flagship Windows Phone is ... far behind the current blockbusters, Apple's iPhone 4S and Samsung's Galaxy S II," analyst Alexander Peterc said in a note.

The brokerage slashed its view on sales of the Lumia to end-users to just 800,000 from its initial "ballpark estimate" of 2 million and said this compared with launch-quarter sales of between 3.5 million and 4 million for Nokia's previous flagship, the N8.

Exane BNP Paribas cut its price target on Nokia shares to 3.30 euros from 3.70 euros and stuck to its "underperform" rating on the stock, which was down 1.3 percent at 3.736 euros by 0939 GMT.

The brokerage surveyed 1,300 consumers in the five markets where the Lumia 800 had gone on sale in the week started December 5, but narrowed the sample to 456 who had declared an intention to purchase a smartphone in the next month.

Japan set to declare nuclear plant stable (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan's government was to declare Friday that the tsunami-devastated Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant had finally achieved a "cold shutdown," meaning it has stabilized and is no longer leaking substantial amounts of radiation.

The announcement would mark a big milestone nine months after the March 11 tsunami touched off a crisis at the plant and sent three of its reactors into meltdowns. Experts noted, however, that the facility remains vulnerable to more problems and will take decades of difficult and dangerous work to safely close down.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda was to announce the government's assessment of conditions at the plant in a news conference later Friday.

The government's official endorsement of the claim by Tokyo Electric Power Co. that the reactors have reached cold shutdown status is a necessary step toward revising evacuation zones around the plant and focusing efforts from simply stabilizing the facility to actually starting the arduous process of shutting it down.

But the assessment has some important caveats.

The announcement is expected to say Fukushima has reached cold shutdown "conditions"_ a less definitive phrasing reflecting the fact that TEPCO cannot measure temperatures of melted fuel in the damaged reactors in the same way as with normally functioning ones. So the government also attached additional conditions to be met, including minimizing radiation leaks around the plant and taking backup safety measures to ensure Fukushima's wrecked reactors are safely cooled.

Even so, the announcement would mark the end of the second phase of the government's lengthy roadmap to completely decommission the plant, which is expected to take 30 years or more.

Officials can now start discussing whether to allow some evacuated residents who lived in areas with lesser damage from the plant to return home ? although a 12-mile (20-kilometer) zone around the plant is expected to remain off limits for years to come.

Some 100,000 people were displaced by the crisis.

A cold shutdown normally means a nuclear reactor's coolant system is at atmospheric pressure and the its reactor core is at a temperature below 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius), making it impossible for a chain reaction to take place.

According to TEPCO, temperature gauges inside the Fukushima reactors show the pressure vessel is at around 70 C (158 F). The government also says the amount of radiation now being released around the plant is at or below 1 millisievert per year ? equivalent to the annual legal exposure limit for ordinary citizens before the crisis began.

Booie, the smoking chimpanzee, dies at 44

(AP) ? A chimpanzee that kicked a smoking habit and used sign language to beg for candy has died at a California animal refuge.

Martine Colette of the Wildlife WayStation says Booie was being treated for a heart condition when he died Saturday at 44. The chimp had been living at the animal sanctuary near Los Angeles since 1995, after he retired from a research lab.

Colette says she turned Booie into a non-smoker but couldn't fix his sweet tooth. She says he would use his skill to panhandle by signing: "Booie see sweet in pocket."

Booie's death is a serious blow to the financially troubled refuge because he was one of its best fundraisers. Martine says he had fans around the world because of his TV appearances.

Could US drivers ever abide by cellphone ban? (AP)

DALLAS ? Junior Woods has a well-practiced routine for conducting business on the road: While driving throughout rural Arkansas, the electronics salesman steals a glance at his cellphone every so often, checking for text messages and emails.

"I can keep both hands on the steering wheel and just look down my nose and read in 10-second intervals," Woods said in a phone interview from Rogers, Ark. "I'm actually doing that right now."

Like millions of other Americans, Woods uses his car as a mobile office, relying on his phone almost every hour of every workday to stay productive and earn a living. So would drivers ever abide by a proposed ban on almost all cellphone use behind the wheel, even if it is hands-free? Could they afford to?

Those are just a few of the questions looming over a federal recommendation that seeks to rein in what has become an essential tool of American business.

Woods said the ban, if adopted, would devastate his sales. Because he lives in a rural state, his minimum drive is an hour and a half.

"If I have a 3 1/2-hour drive to Little Rock, and I've got 100 messages to return, it's going to turn that into a six-hour drive," he said. "I've got no secretary. I'm the administrative assistant. I'm the salesman. I'm the sales director."

The National Transportation Safety Board declared Tuesday that texting, emailing or chatting while driving is just too dangerous to be allowed anywhere in the United States. It urged all states to impose total bans except for emergencies.

The NTSB, an independent agency that investigates accidents and makes safety recommendations, doesn't have the power to impose regulations or make grants. But its suggestions carry significant weight with lawmakers and regulators.

Still, a decision rests with the states, meaning that 50 separate legislatures would have to act. And many lawmakers are just as wedded to their cellphones as Woods.

"I think all of us have mixed feelings on this issue. How could you not?" said U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly, whose northern Virginia district has some of the longest, most traffic-choked commutes in the country.

Before going to Congress, the Democrat spent most of his career at the county level, driving around Fairfax County with his cellphone. Now he commutes to Capitol Hill by carpool or mass transit so he can use his phone without getting behind the wheel.

While he's sympathetic to the NTSB's safety concerns, he said, a blanket ban on cellphone use would be unenforceable. But he agrees that hands-free devices offer little improvement over those that are hand-held.

"It's a cognitive distraction," he said. "The mental attention shifts ... to that other party, not to the task at hand."

Dallas event planner Debbie Vaughan said she would abide by any ban, but her service to clients would be diminished.

"I know many people are frustrated when all they get is voicemail," said Vaughan, who spends about 10 hours a week on her cellphone in her car.

Bruce McGovern said he would have no choice but to defy the law.

McGovern, who owns four Massage Envy and four European Wax Center franchises in the Dallas area, said he spends up to four days a week on the road, traveling between his businesses.

"My business would go down. We'd have problems we couldn't solve. My employees wouldn't be able to reach me and get timely answers," McGovern said.

"Customer issues that only I can resolve would have to be delayed. And in this day and age, customers want instantaneous results for things. They're not willing to wait three or four hours," he said.

McGovern, who said he uses hands-free technology 90 percent of the time, said he's been conducting business from his car for more than 20 years, starting with an early "bag phone" that predated today's much smaller cellphones.

"It's a total overreach of the government. It'll be enforced erratically. They can't even enforce the speed limits," McGovern said.

Boston attorney Jeffrey Denner said he racks up at least 25 billable hours each week while driving.

"I probably spend three hours a day on the phone in the car ? minimum. In an hour, I can talk to 10 people. On my way to court, I call people to make sure witnesses are lined up. It's become a part of my life."

Besides, he said, there's plenty of other distractions modern drivers deal with.

"If you want to talk about distraction, you should talk about how the whole notion of technology is distracting. Let's look at the command centers in cars right now, with the GPS, climate control, satellite radio with 9,000 options, looking down, getting directions. There are 20 different things we're playing with in our cars all the time."

J.R. Maddox of Minneapolis, another attorney, said it makes no sense to ban hands-free devices.

"If they wanted to go that far, they should also ban speaking to anyone in the car," Maddox said. His hands-free device allows him to keep both hands on the wheel, maintain his field of vision and look over his shoulder.

"The fact of the matter is we have to travel to work. It would reduce the amount of time I could actually communicate with clients and, hence, billing time."

The federal government last year banned texting while driving for commercial truck and bus drivers. The ban was extended to all hand-held cellphone use last month, although commercial drivers can still use hands-free devices.

The chairman of a South Dakota trucking company said he doesn't understand why people need to be talking on the phone while driving in the first place.

"There's nothing so important that they need to run somebody over because they couldn't stop," said Larry Anderson, of A & A Express Inc., a Brandon, S.D., company that hauls refrigerated products.

In New York City, Chrissy DeLuso and her mother were waiting for a cab to take them to a Broadway show. Both women agreed that texting while driving was a bad idea and didn't mind if the government cracked down on it.

But when it came to banning all cellphone use, they hesitated.

With a smile, DeLuso admitted she "can't promise" she wouldn't be talking on her cell phone even if it were illegal.

Jo Trizila, president of Dallas public relations company TrizCom Inc., said she would welcome a comprehensive ban, even for hands-free technology.

"I think it would be actually good for mental health," she said, "that you just have some down time."

House and Senate agree on sweeping defense bill (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Congress is pressing ahead with a massive $662 billion defense bill that requires military custody for terrorism suspects linked to al-Qaida, including those captured within the U.S., with lawmakers hoping their last-minute revisions will mollify President Barack Obama and eliminate a veto threat.

Leaders of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees announced late Monday that they had reached agreement on the policy-setting legislation that had gotten caught up in an escalating fight on whether to treat suspected terrorists as prisoners of war or criminals in the civilian justice system.

Responding to personal appeals from Obama and his national security team, the lawmakers added language on national security waivers and other changes that they hoped would ensure administration support for the overall bill.

"I assured the president that we were working on additional assurances, that the concerns were not accurate," Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., who spoke to Obama last week, told reporters at a news conference. "That we'd do everything we could to make sure they were allayed, and met."

White House officials said Tuesday they were reviewing the bill. It was unclear whether they would hold firm on the veto threat.

Overall, the bill would authorize $662 billion for military personnel, weapons systems, national security programs in the Energy Department, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in the fiscal year that began on Oct. 1. Reflecting a period of austerity and a winding down of decade-old conflicts, the bill is $27 billion less than Obama requested and $43 billion less than Congress gave the Pentagon for fiscal 2011.

The legislation would impose tough new sanctions on Iran, targeting foreign financial institutions that do business with the Central Bank in Tehran. Levin said the negotiators made some changes to address concerns of the Treasury Department, but he said the legislation is "96 percent" of what the Senate had unanimously backed.

One of the measure's chief sponsors welcomed the results. "Moving forward, the Congress will need to be more vigilant than ever before in holding the administration's feet to the fire to collapse the Central Bank of Iran and force international financial institutions to choose between doing business in the U.S. and doing business in Iran," said Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill.

Reflecting growing public weariness with more than a decade of war in Afghanistan, the bill requires the president to develop options to accelerate the ability of the Afghanistan National Security Forces to take responsibility for the country's protection, with benchmarks on progress.

The lawmakers said they hoped the House and Senate could vote on the final bill by Thursday and send it to the president.

The issue of how to handle captured terrorist suspects has divided Obama's senior national security officials and Congress, as well as Democrats and Republicans.

The administration insists that military, law enforcement and intelligence officials need flexibility in prosecuting the war on terror. Obama points to his administration's successes in eliminating Osama bin Laden and radical Islamic cleric Anwar al-Awlaki. Republicans counter that their efforts are necessary to respond to an evolving, post-Sept. 11 threat, and that Obama has failed to produce a consistent policy on handling terror suspects.

The bill would require that the military take custody of a suspect deemed to be a member of al-Qaida or its affiliates who is involved in plotting or committing attacks on the United States, with an exemption for U.S. citizens.

Responding to appeals from Obama, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and FBI Director Robert Mueller, lawmakers added a provision that says nothing in the bill will affect "existing criminal enforcement and national security authorities of the FBI or any other domestic law enforcement agency" with regard to a captured suspect, "regardless of whether such ... person is held in military custody."

The bill also says the president can waive the provision based on national security. Originally that authority rested with the defense secretary.

House and Senate negotiators dropped several of the provisions in the House bill that also had drawn a veto threat, including the requirement of military tribunals for all cases.

"We took significant steps to address the administration's concerns," Rep. Adam Smith of Washington state, the top Democrat on the House panel, told reporters.

The legislation would deny suspected terrorists, even U.S. citizens seized within the nation's borders, the right to trial and subject them to indefinite detention. The lawmakers made no changes to that language.

Civil rights groups still pressed for a presidential veto.

"The sponsors of the bill monkeyed around with a few minor details, but all of the core dangers remain ? the bill authorizes the president to order the military to indefinitely imprison without charge or trial American citizens and others found far from any battlefield, even in the United States itself. The bill strikes at the very heart of American values," Christopher Anders, senior legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement. "Based on suspicion alone, no place and no person are off-limits to military detention without charge or trial."

The bill would go after foreign financial institutions that do business with Iran's central bank by barring them from opening or maintaining correspondent operations in the United States. It would apply to foreign central banks only for transactions that involve the sale or purchase of petroleum or petroleum products.

The petroleum penalties would only apply if the president, in six months, determines there is a sufficient alternative supply and if the country with jurisdiction over the financial institution has not significantly reduced its purchases of Iranian oil. It also allows the president to waive the penalties based on national security.

In a reflection of the uneasy relationship between the United States and Pakistan, the bill would freeze some $700 million in assistance until Pakistan comes up with a strategy to deal with improvised explosive devices.

More TV Channels Coming To Xbox Live (NewsFactor)

A week after Microsoft and Verizon announced that FiOS channels are coming to the Xbox 360, the software giant is unleashing more apps to allow TV viewing online via the hit gaming console.

As of Tuesday, Dec. 6, Xbox Live subscribers in the U.S. will be able to watch EPIX, ESPN, Hulu Plus and the Today show on MSNBC, the partnership channel between Microsoft and NBC.

Customers in Japan will get Hulu, while German viewers will have Sky Go, United Kingdom viewers will have LOVEFiLM and Italian viewers will be able to watch Premium Play. Spanish Xbox users can watch Telefonica Espana. Netflix, available already to U.S. users, will be accessible in Canada as well.

'More Social and Personal'

Twenty-seven more channels will debut later this month. For U.S. users, they include iHeartRadio, Sony Pictures' Crackle, more programming from MSNBC and Wal-Mart's Vudu movie rental service. YouTube will be available in 24 countries, and more programming, including content from HBO and Xfinity, will debut in 2012.

Together with the Kinect voice and motion control system and the Bing search engine to find and select programs, Microsoft hopes the Xbox will transform the way consumers aggregate their entertainment.

"A new era in entertainment begins where all your entertainment is together in one place: your games, movies, TV shows, music and sports," said Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. "With this update, Xbox 360 system owners will experience Kinect voice control integrated with Bing search, making your TV and entertainment experiences more social and personal than ever."

The announcement is a landmark because media companies have been slow to allow their content to stream on the Internet and away from airwaves, where advertising rates still command the highest rates.

"Microsoft is moving aggressively to extend its network of TV and online video partners, improve search with voice and gesture controls, and make the Xbox 360 more compelling," said Sam Rosen, a senior digital home analyst with ABI Research.

Still, Rosen considers the new Xbox features "evolutionary and not revolutionary."

He notes that it's a step away from free TV via the Internet because much of the content will require Xbox Live Gold membership, which starts at $5.00 per month.

"Most of these content features sit behind the Xbox Live paywall, so it's another annual subscription fee hitting your credit card," he said. "Many of the offerings -- Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, Sky Go, etc -- are available on other platforms, i.e., Samsung or Sony Connected TVs or Blu-ray players."

Channel-Surfing, Old School

Rosen also said Kinect has a way to go before it replaces your handy remote control.

"While Siri has shown what a well-designed voice control system can do, the Kinect remote control, in our experience, has proved less effective," Rosen said. "For gesture controls, not everyone's living room has the ideal spacing of 6 to 8 feet to work well. For voice controls, it may need a remote control/microphone integration to really get past noise and distance issues and work well."

Average consumers, used to surfing TV with buttons, may be initially reluctant, Rosen said.

"To make a change in users' behaviors is going to take a good amount of time, or a compelling experience much like the shift to touchscreens on cell phones," he said.

GMAC ends most Mass. mortgage lending after suit (AP)

NEW YORK ? One day after it was among five major banks sued by Massachusetts over deceptive foreclosure practices, GMAC Mortgage said Friday that it will stop purchasing new mortgage loans written by third parties in the state.

The mortgage origination and servicing arm of Ally Financial Inc. said it will honor all commitments with correspondent lenders and wholesale brokers through Monday. The bank, formerly known as General Motors Acceptance Corp., is 74 percent owned by the U.S. government,

GMAC Mortgage will continue to lend directly to homeowners in Massachusetts.

A spokeswoman said most of its business in the state is done through third parties like community banks, which originate loans and sell them to GMAC.

GMAC then handles the loan servicing, or collecting homeowner payments.

The spokeswoman could not provide a breakdown specifically for Massachusetts, but said the correspondent and brokerage business represents 84 percent of GMAC Mortgage business nationwide.

Industry figures show GMAC was the fourth largest mortgage lender in the state in the third quarter.

In a statement GMAC said it "has taken this action because recent developments have led mortgage lending in Massachusetts to no longer be viable."

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley said in a statement that GMAC has to follow the law before foreclosing on homeowners in order to do business in the state. "With today's action, it appears GMAC has acknowledged it has a problem following those laws and being held accountable for doing so."

The suit filed Thursday by Coakley claims GMAC and other banks violated Massachusetts law with "unlawful and deceptive" conduct, including unlawful foreclosures, false documentation, robo-signing, and deceptive practices related to loan modifications.

Robo-signing involves a bank official signing numerous documents without verifying the information they contain.

The lawsuit also named Bank of America Corp., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Wells Fargo & Co., and Citigroup Inc., along with Mortgage Electronic Registration System, Inc. and its parent company as defendants. The company, a mortgage registry database, has been accused of shoddy record-keeping in large numbers of foreclosure proceedings.

The lawsuit was filed as talks have been dragging on for more than a year between major banks and the attorneys general from all 50 states over fraudulent foreclosure practices that drove millions of Americans from their homes after the housing bubble burst.

Merkel: Financial crisis solution to 'take years'

(AP) ? German Chancellor Angela Merkel pushed for stronger rules against overspending as the long-term answer to Europe's debt crisis, saying fixes for the euro's flaws need to be written into changes in the basic EU treaty.

Merkel's stance, laid out Friday, could be part of what markets have greeted as an emerging plan for more effective action to contain the crisis, combined with more aggressive action by the European Central Bank to quickly lower borrowing costs for hard-pressed governments facing financial disaster.

Speaking to lawmakers in Parliament ahead of a crucial European summit next week, the German leader emphasized that tougher rules against running up debt were the only path forward ? a process could take years.

"The German government has made it clear that the European crisis will not be solved in one fell swoop," Merkel said. "It's a process, and this process will take years."

But despite her insistence on long-term changes, the push by Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy is being seen as one half of new effort by European leaders to finally get a grip on the debt crisis more than two years after it started in Greece.

The other half could be more short-term help for other heavily indebted governments such as Italy from the ECB. Bank President Mario Draghi on Thursday appeared to dangle an offer of new, extraordinary measures if political leaders at the Dec. 9 summit can answer his call for "a fundamental restatement of the fiscal rules."

"Other elements might follow," Draghi said, fueling speculation that the bank could step up its so-far limited program to buy government bonds issued by struggling countries.

That helps keep their borrowing costs down, but the bank has resisted plunging in with bigger purchases, saying it was up to governments to fix their finances and not look to the central bank for help avoiding painful decisions on cutting back spending and shaking up over-regulated economies.

But Draghi stressed the bond buys "can only be limited," leaving analysts speculating he might have other forms of support in mind, such as extending more unlimited credit to banks having difficulty borrowing because of market fears they may suffer losses on the government bonds they hold.

The prospect of more ECB help has boosted markets, along with coordinated steps Wednesday by central banks to improve shaky commercial banks' ability to borrow U.S. dollars to fund their operations.

The yield on Italian 10-year bonds fell to 6.48 percent on Friday from over 7 percent the day before, and stocks rose in Asia and Europe. Wall Street futures also pointed higher ahead of the opening in New York.

Italy was readying new action ahead of the summit as well. New Prime Minister Mario Monti has pledged to unveil new austerity measures and stuctural reforms at a Cabinet meeting on Monday. He will be meeting with political parties on Saturday and unions on Sunday to present his much-awaited plans.

Rising borrowing costs fed by fears of default led to Greece, Ireland and Portugal seeking bailout loans from other eurozone governments and the International Monetary Fund.

Similar fears are afflicting Italy and Spain, which are too large to bail out, feeding fears of a disastrous financial collapse that could push the global economy back into recession.

Merkel said that because the crisis is above all one of trust, in order to move forward, "we need to do away with the underlying deficiencies in the fiscal and currency union."

"In order to win back trust, we need to do more, where we today have agreements, we need in the future to have legally binding regulations," Merkel said.

The eurozone's current budget rules have been violated 60 times over the past decade by a number of nations ? including Germany ? but no country has been seriously punished.

To ensure that nations are keeping their budgets in check with the limits of the stability pact ? deficits not more than 3 percent of gross domestic product and overall government debt of not more than 60 percent of GDP ? Germany is pushing for the right to take countries in violation before the European Court of Justice.

On Thursday, Sarkozy called for a "refounding and rethinking the organization of Europe." He said that without some new "convergence" among European countries, the continent's crushing debt could destroy the euro. Merkel and Sarkozy are to meet Monday to finalize their joint strategy ahead of next week's EU summit.

Merkel reiterated her objection to so-called eurobonds, held jointly by all EU nations, telling Parliament that jointly backed government debt across the eurozone is no solution.

"The current discussion (about joint bonds) does not contribute to solving the crisis," Merkel said.

She also rejected an idea floated this week, of taking advantage of a clause in the EU's constitution to allow the eurozone nations to enact their own treaties for governing the currency, underlining that any treaty changes must include all 27 member states, not just euro members.

"We are going to Brussels with the goal of pushing through treaty changes, in order to avoid a spirit of division between the eurozone and non-eurozone members," Merkel said.

Google in talks to take on Amazon in retail: report (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Google Inc is pondering an Internet service to help consumers shop online and take advantage of same-day delivery, hoping to stanch the loss of Web traffic to Amazon.com Inc, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

The Internet search leader is in talks with major retailers and shippers, including Macy's, Gap Inc and OfficeMax, to set up the service, the newspaper cited people familiar with the matter as saying.

Google declined to comment and Amazon did not return calls for comment. A Gap spokeswoman declined to comment, while Macy's and OfficeMax were not available for comment.

Google may be casting a wary eye on the popularity of Amazon.com's Prime service -- which offers free two-day shipping for $79 a year in the U.S. -- fearing it will entice away the Web traffic it depends on from its own sites.

About 40 percent of Google's revenue comes from retail sources, according to Scot Wingo, chief executive of e-commerce company ChannelAdvisor.

Amazon Prime has been such a big success in recent years that it has begun to threaten this big chunk of Google's revenue, Wingo explained.

"Once a consumer joins Amazon Prime, their searches for products at Google have to decrease precipitously," Wingo wrote in a blog on Thursday. He owns Google and Amazon shares.

"As a Prime user, I only look for products on Google and other channels if I can't find it on Amazon," Wingo added. "Amazon has created a lock-in and they have the world's best product search engine. That's 40 percent of the Internet that Google really can't afford to lose serious share on."

Google's plan under consideration stops short of selling directly to consumers, the Journal cited a person familiar with the matter as saying.

Google will instead work with retailers' websites, combining an existing product-search feature that directs shoppers to those sites, with a new shipping service that it intends to create and oversee, the Journal reported.

That new feature is designed to determine if a nearby physical store has a desired product in stock. Google could then offer the consumer an option to receive their goods within a day or two, for a fee, the newspaper said.

Google plans a test trial in the San Francisco Bay area for the new initiative, which could also involve United Parcel Service Inc, the Journal added.

Google still dominates when shoppers are searching for products to buy on the Internet. Handling the next steps, such as purchasing and getting items delivered, makes sense, said Eric Best, chief executive of e-commerce firm Mercent.

However, Amazon owns inventory and runs a massive chain of warehouses, so it tightly controls the process of taking orders and delivering goods.

Google would instead rely on third-party logistics companies to handle these fulfillment steps, Best said.

"Ensuring third-party partners perform to high service levels will be the biggest execution risk," Best added. "Consumers will need to have a similar experience to what they already get with Amazon."

Exclusive First Look: Eliza Dushku Gets a Tight Grip on The League (omg!)

When Eliza Dushku guest-stars on The League, don't be surprised if there is some tension in the air. It's not personal, it's just sports.

"She's a big Boston girl so she loves the Pats, the Celtics, and the Red Sox. I, on the other hand, am a big New York fan so I love the Giants, the Yankees and the Knicks," Stephen Rannazzisi ?tells TVGuide.com. "So there was a lot of angry sexual tension between the two of us."

In Dushku's episode, airing next Thursday at 10:30/9:30c on FX, the Buffy alum plays Kevin's new Krav Maga instructor after his wife encourages him to work out more. As seen in this exclusive first look, his new teacher is very hands-on, much to the disbelief of Kevin's wife and all of his friends. "Nobody can imagine that a woman that hot would be attracted to a guy like Kevin," Rannazzisi says.

Although Rannazzisi didn't get to meet Dushku until the day of shooting, he admits the fact that the two didn't know each other already made their close scenes together less uncomfortable. "I went as far as she was willing to go and she was so funny and really open to trying almost anything," he says. "The further she goes, the more awkward it is for me and that's where the comedy lies."

"Those are the days when you should go into work for free," he adds.

Are you excited to see Dushku on The League?
